New kids on the block...

What's happening in the world of Tequila?

With an ever increasing market it's hard to keep track of the latest releases or spirits across the pond that may make their way to the UK soon, especially in categories such as Tequila. With hundreds to choose from do you stick with your favorites to shoot or in a Margarita? Or branch out with a little knowledge from The Cocktail Ponders...

Here's a little run down of my newest favorites and what you can do with them.

Patron XO Cafe Incendio

BUY HERE

This delicious blend of   Patron Silver, Criollo chocolate and Mexican Arbol Chile really packs a punch.
It boasts the distinctive XO Cafe deep coffee vibe with sumptuous chocolate notes and a killer chili afterburn.

It's become a pure staple at my bar The Varsity Club in Oxford, UK. The team go mad for it as the latest shooter as it really showcases something different. It's fun on its own, it's surprisingly really mixable in drinks and is up there with the chili trend found in many drinks in the UK at the moment.

Mexican Gateaux

50ml Patron Incendio20ml Cherry Heering2 Dash Angostura Orange Bitters35ml Cranberry Juice10ml Cerise Syrup

Shake it all up and serve straight up in a Martini glass

It's sweet yet spicy and dry yet smooth. A total mouth overload of textures, flavors and combinations but its so good!

Tequila Aguila Superior

For those who know about champagne or cognac understand the importance and regulations behind the terroir. Like these infamous categories, Tequila has specific and strict laws behind what you can actually put on the bottle.

Tequila Aguila boasts the use of The Blue Agave Tequilana Weber Plant, the best for superior tequila production and the only Agave that allows you to label your tequila '100% Blue Agave'.

Tequilas that use a variety of Agave species are called 'Mixto' tequilas, and can vary in flavor tremendously.

'By using white oak barrels that have previously held whiskey
they believe they add a higher level of consistency and flavor
to the already pure spirit'

This gorgeously smooth Reposado (meaning rested) tequila is bottled at a cool 35%, it makes it easier to drink 4 more that's for sure.

The Reposado is full of great oak flavors with the distinctive Agave musk, plus the bottle is seriously cool and is something i want on my shelf at home

Aguila Old Fashioned

60ml Tequila Aguila Reposado
10ml Agave Syrup
2 Dash Grapefruit Bitters
Grapefruit Zest

Stir it all up in a frozen mixing glass and serve over fresh ice in a tumbler. Its sweet yet seriously smooth and the grapefruit cuts through with a gentle zing and bitterness.

Karma Tequila

Karma's distillery is family owned and operated, utilizing traditional distilling methods that have been passed down from generations for over 70 years. Karma is handmade in small batches giving it a distinctive smoothness, texture and flavor.

Karma's boasts a really sleek bottle design that's functional but fun and attractive if a little masculine. They're all individually hand labeled and numbered too, nice to see a more modern style bottle show a bit of authenticity.

Blood Orange & Rose Margarita

35ml Karma Tequila
15ml Lanique Liqueur
20ml Triple Sec
25ml Monin Blood Orange Syrup
20ml Blood Orange Juice

Give it a really good blend with ice, serve in a margarita glass with a big wedge of blood orange. Zesty, delicious, fresh, floral.

Camarena Reposado Tequila

After winning Best in Show in the world spirit category Camarena boasts 6 generations of tequila making with 100% Blue Agave.

Camarena Reposado is left to rest in American Oak barrels for 60 days before bottling. They say their ageing process lends a touch of soft spice to the natural sweetness in the agave. Its a seriously robust tequila with an elegant finish.

Whilst i'm not so sold on the bottle design the liquid is great, and that's ultimately whats important.
This tequila really lends it's self to dryer juices like pomegranate. It's natural sweetness needs to be balanced alongside the heavy agave notes.

Pomegranate Paloma

50ml Camarena Reposado
100ml Pomegranate Juice
10ml Coconut Water
20ml Lime Juice
20ml Gomme Syrup
25ml Soda Water

The natural saltiness of the coconut water gives that classic tequila/salt taste without using traditional sea salt or table salt around the rim.

Whatever Tequila you enjoy drinking try branching out a little, take the recommendation from your bartender.

Enjoy Tequila Responsibly
