The Porn Star Martini- What's all the fuss about?
Working with cocktails full time is interesting on so many
levels. The flavours, the techniques and the trends all come together from
world-wide influences seen on Social Media, at competitions, blogs and word of
mouth.
The latest hot topic surrounds the Porn Star Martini- a
gorgeously sweet cocktail that for years has been classed as something a little
trashy, an overly feminine ‘get drunk quick whilst looking lady-like’ kind of
cocktail. What we are seeing now involves all customers opting to try this
two-part tipple, with popularity in our bar starting to swamp the sales figures
of The Mojito.
Whilst looking decadent and tropical the Porn Star actually
packs a boozy punch.
Difford’s Guide calls for the following
½ Fresh passion-fruit
60ml Ketel One Vodka (infused with Vanilla)
15ml Passoa
15ml Monin Vanilla Syrup
15ml Freshy Squeezed Lime
60ml G.H Mumm Brut Cordon Rouge Champagne.
All shaken into a yellow/orange tinge with the champagne
served on the side- How yummy.
Here at Sub 13 in Bath we’re all about fresh produce. Our recipe
omit’s the Passoa Liqueur in favour of fresh Passion Fruit puree and a little
Vanilla Sugar. It allows the sharpness of the fruit to really shine alongside
the sweetness of Madagascan Vanilla.
Sub 13’s Porn Star Martini
50ml Absolut Vodka (steeped with 4 Madagascan split Vanilla
Pods for 8 hours minimum)
15ml Passion Fruit Puree
20ml Vanilla Sugar
25ml Lime Juice
25ml Perrier Jouet Grand Brut
Shake all ingredients apart from the Champagne, double strain
and serve in a frozen martini glass with a Passion Fruit half floating on top.
Serve the Champagne on the side in a shot glass. A balanced and intriguing taste
sensation with a bubbly after-taste.
Invented by Douglas Ankrah of LAB Bar in 2002, the cocktail
was originally named after a nightclub in Cape Town (The Maverick Martini), but
was later renamed to suit the way in which consumers were supposed to eat the Passion
Fruit seeds before imbibing. The name stuck, and the cocktail boomed with menu
adaptations and the original being seen all over the world. A modern day
classic has been born!
Today big chains such as Be @ 1, The London Cocktail
Club and The Slug and Lettuce all boast the prominence of the Porn Star, and it’s
not hard to see why.
Overall it’s tasty, tropical, boozy and gimmicky. What more
could you want?
As far as I am aware - Douglas used Cariel Vanilla vodka in the original Pornstar martini. I will ask him i January when he comes down to see me.
